Recent news of four American hostages killed by their Somali pirate captors today brought something to mind. Sometimes, even when you do everything right, things don't turn out the way you want them to. In life, whether dire circumstances or everyday existence, some things are just beyond one's control.
This is in contrast to anything the optimistic American spirit and the movies would have us believe. It is a hard lesson to learn and one worth remembering.

The Importance of Trust
More important than any other intangible asset, trust is key. Love, political capital, charm, all rely on a solid foundation of trust.
I just had a business experience with a customer who (wrongly) felt he couldn't trust me to look out for his interests. Didn't even give me a chance to explain myself and he gave the job away. We've been working together for 7 years! I was worth a friggin' phone call. Now I can't trust him. That relationship is now dead or maybe in a coma.
Even more important in personal relationships, once trust is violated, it becomes very difficult to continue without serious discussion and consideration. It is possible to still love someone with damaged trust but things get strange. From day one, we learn to trust our parents to provide for us. Those babies that don't fail to thrive. Restoring trust is one of the most difficult things to do.
All relationships are based on trust. Everything follows.

Well, here I am. Blogging. Web logging to be exact. Blogging sounds like something to do after a heavy night's drinking. We'll see what the future brings.
